Connecting research and careers: the University of Bologna’s PhD recruiting day

A new initiative to connect doctoral candidates and researchers with companies and organisations interested in advanced research skills.

The University of Bologna has launched its first PhD Recruiting Day, an event designed to strengthen the connection between doctoral education and the labour market. The initiative aims to support PhD candidates and early-stage researchers in exploring career opportunities beyond academia, while offering companies and organisations direct access to highly qualified profiles.

The event is rooted in a growing awareness that the skills developed during a PhD – from analytical thinking and problem solving to project management and data analysis – are increasingly valuable across a wide range of sectors. The PhD Recruiting Day creates a dedicated space for dialogue, where research meets industry and innovation-oriented organisations.

A bridge between research and professional careers

Inspired by successful international models, the Recruiting Day brings together employers from different fields who are interested in research-driven innovation and advanced expertise. Participants have the opportunity to interact directly with recruiters, learn about career paths outside the academic world and better understand how their research experience can translate into concrete professional roles.

At the same time, the initiative helps employers gain a deeper understanding of the added value that PhD graduates can bring to their organisations, particularly in terms of critical thinking, adaptability and the ability to manage complex challenges.

Enhancing employability and awareness

One of the key goals of the PhD Recruiting Day is to broaden career awareness among doctoral candidates, encouraging them to consider a wide range of professional trajectories. By facilitating direct exchanges with employers, the event supports more informed career choices and helps participants approach the job market with greater confidence.

The initiative is part of the University of Bologna’s broader commitment to employability, knowledge transfer and innovation, and reflects a strategic effort to strengthen links between academia, industry and society.

With the launch of the PhD Recruiting Day, the University of Bologna takes an important step towards recognising and promoting the role of PhD graduates as key contributors to economic development, innovation ecosystems and societal progress.
