it-ER stories: Roberta Serra
Leave, take everything and come back
Roberta is a student in the Master program of digital technology management and cyber security at Bologna Business School. She comes from Emilia-Romagna, but during her academic career, she had the opportunity to go abroad several times. She studied in the United States, in Romania and also a brief work experience in Canada at the Italian embassy.
Whenever Roberta went abroad, she always came back to Italy. The question she heard most often was: "Why did you come back? Why not pursue a career abroad?". Her return should in no way be perceived as a failure, on the contrary, returning is as difficult as leaving. The experience abroad was extremely formative. She learned a lot and acquired several skills that she will not spend abroad, but here in Italy.
As Roberta told us, she wants to be part of something in her territory. She wants to be part of the sustainable transition process, the data revolution, the digitalization of small and medium-sized enterprises and so on. All this, because Emilia-Romagna is the right place to be if you want to be part of this change. So, in this case, the advice is to go abroad, learn and get everything you can and then feel free to come back!
Furthermore, she is also part of our it-ER Ambassadors, the network of international university students, PhDs, researchers and knowledge workers representing the Emilia-Romagna Innovation Ecosystem throughout the world!
