Emilia-Romagna is a region of north-eastern Italy with about 5 million inhabitants.
It borders Lombardy and Veneto, Piedmont, Liguria, Tuscany, Marche and the Republic of San Marino. To the east it is bordered by the Adriatic Sea.
Emilia-Romagna is divided into nine provincial areas (Bologna, Modena, Reggio-Emilia, Ferrara, Rimini, Piacenza, Ravenna, Parma, and Forlì-Cesena) and Bologna is its capital city.
It is one of the richest regions of Italy, with high employment rates and a strong propensity for internationalization.
For its levels of well-being and its quality of life it ranks among the top cities in Italy, offering great health and social services, public transport, higher education and training.
It has varied cultural and leisure activities, being home to numerous cultural organizations and national and international cultural festivals, also thanks to the varied landscape and environment (hills, mountains and sea) and the presence of a temperate sub-continental climate.
It is the land of various famous persons of the Italian scene, including: Pavarotti, Laura Pausini, Vasco Rossi, Marco Pantani, Giovanni Pascoli, Giuseppe Verdi, Enzo Ferrari, Andrea Pazienza and many others.
The official language is Italian, but English is commonly spoken, especially among the younger generations, since it is a compulsory subject in schools from an early age. In addition to Italian, there are several traditional Emilia-Romagna dialects.
It is home to many cities of art, and its cuisine is well-known throughout the world.
